Outward Bound: Gorge Scrambling with Leo Houlding
With rockstar climber and adventurer Leo Houlding being announced as a new Trustee for Outward Bound last week, I was asked to come and take some photos of Leo at the Ullswater Centre for the Trust’s PR. The original plan to do some climbing with some of the students, but the weather forecast caused a last minute switch to a gorge scramble on Coldcove Gill in Deepdale (seriously, the names around here really are one of my favourite things about Cumbria).
It was an absolute pleasure to meet Leo, a thoroughly nice bloke, who seems like a perfect fit for Outward Bound. He was a natural with the students, jumping right in (literally and figuratively) and getting involved in the scramble. Equally awesome, was watching a group of young students having a proper adventure and learning that teamwork is the only way that anyone is going to make it to the top. The OBT instructors do a fantastic job of teaching, encouraging, persuading and supporting the students, without doing any of the hard work for them. Getting to the top is all the students’ own achievement.
Leo said he believes that all schools should include at least a week of outdoor adventure experience for all children. I couldn’t agree more.
I can’t wait until my kids are old enough…
Here’s a few of my favourite shots from the day.
