The Improbable Forest (work in progress)

The Improbable Forest, part 1

The floods that hit Cumbria last winter left a number of bridges closed for several months, and a huge amount of roads temporarily closed as repair crews roam the county. The geography of the many rivers and lakes in this mountain range can make getting around quite interesting, and some of the detours very long. When I recently found the road to one of my favourite dog walks closed for repairs, we went in search of a somewhere new. After a few detours, and with increasingly desperate noises coming from dogs in the back of the car, we ended up on a convenient, but fairly unpromising footpath. Which just goes to show.. sometimes you need to look up from the map and go exploring… the path led to this piece of woodland, hidden away and well off the beaten track. I love the old broadleaf trees in Cumbria, I never seen oaks grow like this anywhere else. It seems completely improbable that a forest would grow like this, in a place like this. But it does. What really interests me is that this is just a vestigial strip of woodland that would once have been part of much, much larger forest that would have covered so much of the Lake District.

I keep getting drawn back here. As with most locations, the better I get to know them, the more different lights and seasons I see them in, the better my pictures get. This place particularly is an incredibly complex, crowded environment that is really difficult to make into coherent images. These few images are just the start. I pretty sure I haven’t seen this place in its’ best light yet, I’m looking forward to seeing how it changes through the seasons. I’ve also got a half-formed idea that I want to use this place as a location for a fashion shoot.. but more about that later…
